Important Advisory for GSTR-99C Key Changes Starting FY 2023-24

As of October 15, 2024, important changes have been made to the GSTR-9 and GSTR-9C forms for the financial year 2023-24. These changes are meant to make the filing process easier and help taxpayers report Input Tax Credit (ITC) more accurately.

Automatic ITC Population in GSTR-9

One major update is the automatic filling of eligible ITC for domestic supplies. However, it excludes ITC from reverse charge and imports. The GST system will now automatically enter this information into Table 8A of GSTR-9.

How Does It Work?

The system will automatically fill in the ITC for domestic supplies made within India. But, it will not include ITC related to reverse charge or imports. As a result, this change reduces manual work, making the filing process faster and less prone to errors.

Where Will You See It?

The system will use data from Table 3(I) of GSTR-2B to automatically fill Table 8A of GSTR-9. Therefore, taxpayers no longer need to manually enter this information, saving time during filing.

Effective Date and Applicability

These changes will take effect from October 15, 2024. They apply to ITC data for FY 2023-24, allowing taxpayers to benefit from automatic ITC population when filing their returns.

New Validation Tool for GSTR-9

In addition to the automatic population, a new validation tool has been introduced. This tool helps taxpayers verify the auto-filled ITC data from GSTR-2B for the period between April 2023 and March 2024.

Why Is This Tool Important?

This validation tool plays a key role in making sure that the ITC data is accurate. It lets taxpayers compare the data with their records, helping them catch any mistakes early. Consequently, this reduces the risk of errors in the final filing.

What Does It Validate?

The tool checks the ITC data in Table 8A of GSTR-9 against the data from GSTR-2B. This ensures that all eligible ITC is correctly reported and helps to prevent errors from being carried forward.

Key Benefits of These Changes

These updates make filing easier and more accurate for taxpayers:

  • Faster Filing: Automatic population reduces manual data entry, making the process quicker and more efficient.
  • Better Accuracy: Automation helps to prevent mistakes, ensuring that the ITC reported is correct.
  • Time-Saving: With ITC for domestic supplies being auto-filled, taxpayers can save valuable time during the filing process.
  • Lower Risk of Errors: The validation tool helps catch and fix errors before filing, reducing the chances of penalties or disputes.
What Taxpayers Should Do

To get the most out of these changes, taxpayers should follow these steps:

  • Review Auto-Filled ITC Data: After October 15, 2024, check the ITC data automatically filled in Table 8A of GSTR-9. Make sure all eligible ITC is included.
  • Use the Validation Tool: The new tool will help you cross-check the ITC data for the financial year. Fix any issues immediately to ensure your report is accurate.
  • Correct Errors Quickly: If you find errors, correct them right away to avoid problems later.
  • Stay Updated: Regularly check the GST portal for any further updates or changes to the filing process.
Conclusion

These changes to GSTR-9 for FY 2023-24 make the filing process simpler. Automatic ITC population and the new validation tool help reduce manual work and improve accuracy. By regularly checking the auto-filled data and using the validation tool, taxpayers can ensure a smooth and error-free filing experience.
